PM Surya Ghar Solar Rooftop Muft Bijli Yojana: It is a great initiative by the Indian government that aims to provide free electricity (300 Units/month) to households in India. The scheme was launched by PM Modi on February 15, 2024. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will be provided with a subsidy as per their electricity usage(1KW,2KW or 3KW or more than 3KW) to install solar panels on their roofs.
This scheme is one more small step towards the green energy. Coal based electricity generation has 49% share in the power generation in India. The Government of India wants to shift towards the green energy(renewal).India has promised to cut its emissions to net zero by 2070.
The subsidy will cover up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels and the beneficiary household need to bear remaining cost. However, this will help the household saving of electricity cost in future.
The scheme is expected to benefit 1 crore households across India. It is estimated that the scheme will save the government Rs. 75,000 crore per year in electricity costs.

How to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
- Step-1 : First, you need to Visit the official website.
- After that, Click on “Apply for Rooftop solar” in quick links section.
- By doing so, you will be redirected to a login page.
- After that, Click on “Registration” option.
- Step-2 : please enter following details for registration.
- Select your State
- Select your Electricity Distribution Company
- Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
- Enter Mobile Number
- Enter Email
- After that, click on “Next” button.
- Step-3 : After the successful registration click on “Login” option & Login with Consumer Number & Mobile Number.
- Step-4 : Now fill the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli scheme.
- Step-5 : Fill out the online application form accurately submit the application form.
- Step-6 : Now, you have to Wait for the feasibility approval from DISCOM. Once you get the feasibility approval install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.
- Step-7 : Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter.
- Step-8 : After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal.
- Step-9 : Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days.
